Print Development: A Design Journey

We sit down with GINIA Head Designer, Zoe, to talk print development and the inspiration behind the Casa Blanca story. A soft, floral print on Ivory silk, in signature GINIA sleep shapes.

What was the inspiration behind the 'Casa Blanca' story & print?

Our inspiration for the AW22 collection, Crystalline, was light and its behaviours- reflection, refraction, diffraction, and interference. The diversity of flower colour has astonished artists, gardeners and scientists for centuries. Flowers generate colour by reflecting only a subset of the wavelengths which make up white light, resulting in a coloured appearance. GINIA has always had close ties to nature for inspiration and it felt fitting that floral light refraction be a key component in the story.

Do you draw the prints by hand?

We often begin with hand drawings, it adds more character and brings the print to life. From there the drawings are digitally rendered and turned into a full scale print.

What drew you to the colours that go into the Casa Blanca print?

We wanted to use this as an opportunity to display colours that are rarer in nature. Pinks, magenta, violet-blue are such striking colours but aren’t often found outside of flowers or the birds and insects they’re designed to attract.

What makes the sleepwear story special to you?

Our prints are always a highlight of the collection for me. They’re unique, personal, and a perfect reflection of the GINIA brand- pardon the Light Behaviour pun haha

What is it like to see the finished product with the print you drew yourself?

It honestly never get’s any less exciting. Seeing my drawings come alive on silk, the way the fabric moves with the print- and then having that fabric transformed into the final garment. It’s pretty special.

Your styling tip for 'Casa Blanca'?

I am fully embracing this noughties resurgence. I’m wearing the chemise as a mini dress, pairing it with a cardigan or leather jacket. Maybe a red lip, accessories. Musings from Chloë Sevigny. I’ve even taken the robe for a few outside-the-house excursions lately. I like layering it over a black cami and denim. Great for this confused weather we’ve had in Sydney recently.

Were there challenges in creating the print and the Casa Blanca Story?

The conversion to digital for sure! It’s never an easy process, but the intricate detail on this particular drawing was a painstaking process to render from paper to digital.
